Quality management: illuminating the path to ISO 15189 accreditation. A view from the Republic of North Macedonia
Katerina Tosheska-Trajkovska, MD, MSc, PhD, is an Associate Professor of Chemistry, Biochemistry and Clinical Biochemistry at the Faculty of Medicine, University Ss Cyril and Methodius in Skopje, Republic of Macedonia. She has graduated and completed a specialization in the field of medical biochemistry (Medical biochemistry specialist) at the Faculty of Medicine, University Ss Cyril and Methodius in Skopje. She finished Interdisciplinary postgraduate studies of Molecular Biology and Genetic Engineering (Tempus Phare Project of the Ss Cyril and Methodius University in Skopje) and earned her MS degree in Molecular medicine. In 2011 she obtained her PhD title. Her research interests are related to the metabolism of lipids, structure and functions of proteins, lipids and enzymes involved in the process of reverse cholesterol transport and to their role in the pathophysiology of cardiovascular diseases.
She was awarded fellowships from American Austrian Federation (AAF) to participate in multiple Open Medical Institute (OMI) short-term continuing medical educational programs, like seminar in “Lipid metabolism”, Health Leadership seminar “Medical Quality and Patient Safety”, “Law and health” seminar. She was fellow of the summer school “Looking for a road map to address the right to health care: comparative frames” organized by the Jean Monnet Network in Health Law and Policy funded by the European Union through its Erasmus + Jean Monnet program.
She has also received travel grants from the IFCC and FEBS.
She is the Quality Manager of the Biochemical Analyses Laboratory, first public laboratory in Republic of Macedonia accredited according MKS EN ISO 15189:2013.
She is certified internal auditor, technical assessor for accreditation of medical laboratories and deputy president of the Technical Committee for testing laboratories of Institute for accreditation of the Republic of North Macedonia.
She is Head of the Institute of Medical and Experimental Biochemistry , Medical Faculty in Skopje.
She was/ is actively involved in several research projects. She has written peer reviewed papers and book chapters, participated in many professional national and international meetings and congresses, as a lecturer and as a member of organizing and scientific committees as well.
She is actively involved in education process at the Medical Faculty in Skopje.
She is a member of the European Organization for External Quality Assurance in Laboratory Medicine (EQALM) and International Atherosclerosis Society (IAS).
She is the current president of the Macedonian Society of Medical Biochemistry and Laboratory Medicine and national representative of IFCC.
